It Would Have Been Enough!

A great and rowdy tradition of the Passover holiday is to sing a zillion choruses of "Deyeynu" proclaiming that if God had performed just one of many miracles it would have been enough, but, wonder of wonders, we were blessed with all of them. Contrary to the belief of one young Rashi student, who said she had a problem with the song and didn't understand why "Ainu" had to die, it is a song not about death, but about thanksgiving and taking stock of the abundance of our lives. It means, more or less, "We've had enough, we've got enough, we're good!" So, in the spirit of the song and to honor this year's Passover celebration (Maddy's first) and to counteract the effects of a rather nightmarish tax bill that makes abundance a mite harder to see clearly, I present our own Deyeynus:

1. If this week had not only been Passover, but also filled with warm sunny days, it would have been enough...DEYEYNU!

2. If this week had not only been Passover, but also filled with warm sunny days AND been Ethan's 31st birthday...DEYEYNU!

3. If this week had not only been Passover, but also filled with warm sunny days AND been Ethan's 31st birthday AND been our 3rd wedding anniversary...DEYEYNU!

4. If this week had not only been Passover, but also filled with warm sunny days AND been Ethan's 31st birthday AND been our 3rd wedding anniversary AND been the start of my school vacation...DEYEYNU! (Side note: there is no such thing as "Vacation" when you have a six-month old baby!)

5. If this week had not only been Passover, but also filled with warm sunny days AND been Ethan's 31st birthday AND been our 3rd wedding anniversary AND been the start of my school vacation AND been the start of baseball season, which I am actually sort of looking forward to now that I have a baby who can wear very cute Red Sox and Mets gear...DEYEYNU!

6. If this week had not only been Passover, but also filled with warm sunny days AND been Ethan's 31st birthday AND been our 3rd wedding anniversary AND been the start of my school vacation AND been the start of baseball season AND included a very successful photo shoot where we got some amazing new pictures of Maddy Rae....DEYEYNU!

7. If this week had not only been Passover, but also filled with warm sunny days AND been Ethan's 31st birthday AND been our 3rd wedding anniversary AND been the start of my school vacation AND been the start of baseball season AND included a very successful photo shoot where we got some amazing new pictures of Maddy Rae AND included a night in which Maddy slept at Bubbe and Papa's house, therefore granting us a solid 8-hours of uninterrupted sleep...DEYEYNU!

As Passover is only seven days long (at least in the reform tradition), I am going to stop there. I'm sure I could keep going, but you get the point. Blessings abound! I have, though, spent the better part of this week concerned about Maddy, who developed a complete disinterest in food and basically stopped eating...solids or otherwise. I am assured that this is just one of many inexplicable phases she may go through, and folks don't seem overly concerned because she seems otherwise healthy and happy. I am thinking it could be due to teething, but will nevertheless be relieved to go see our doctor this Tuesday and hear from her about what's going on. Hopefully it's just another example of my being a too worried Mama. If there is one thing that I keep learning from my daughter, it's that she's just fine. All the time. We are so lucky to have such a happy Boo!
